Beat To Remove Dust

Whether you have a low pile rug, a flat kilim or a shaggy Boucherouite, you can never go wrong with beating your rug to remove dust. You should be careful when beating shaggy rugs as it’s very easy to disengage a portion of it.

Spot Cleaning

If an accidental liquid spill, say of coffee or tea, has landed on your rug, or maybe it has a spot stain, it’s important that you clean that off immediately. Start by dabbing a paper towel at the spot where the liquid spill, and then immediately after put baking soda which will soak up as much of the liquid as possible.

Baking soda only works with simple stains. In case you have a tougher stain, use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar which will be able to break down the stain. Wait for a few minutes after application of the baking soda or mixture and then vacuum the spot.

A mixture of cold water and vinegar in a 1-to-1 ratio is enough to help with a spot stain. You can soak the stain spot with this mixture delivered from a spray bottle. Ensure that you have saturated the wool with the mixture for more perfect and quicker result. You can then use a soft-bristle brush to gently clean the area and then leave it for 10 minutes before blotting out excess liquid using a paper towel.

Deep Cleaning

What makes some of the tribal Moroccan rugs like the Beni Ourain easy to clean is the fact that they’re made of natural colors. In fact, authentic Beni Ourain carpets only have the natural colors of the sheep’s wool that were used in making them; mainly black and white or cream and white, without any artificial rug. To clean them, start by beating the dust out and then hang the carpet on a high wall and run water through it. You can then spot cleans the stains using soap and then rinse the carpet.

Even with this DIY method of cleaning traditional Berber carpets, you should still take the carpet to a professional cleaner after every two to three years.
